IELTS stands for International English Language Testing System. It is a globally recognized test that assesses the English language proficiency of non-native English speakers. The test is designed to evaluate the language abilities of people who want to study, work, or immigrate to countries where English is the primary language of communication.

The IELTS test measures the four key language skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. There are two versions of the test: Academic and General Training. The Academic version is intended for those who wish to study at the undergraduate or postgraduate level, while the General Training version is designed for people who wish to work, live, or immigrate to English-speaking countries.

Many companies around the world provide coaching to prepare students for this exam through online classes, courses, as well as by publishing high quality IELTS study materials. The learning material for IELTS is often created by subject matter experts.

The IELTS exam consists of four parts, which evaluate the candidate’s ability to use English language in various contexts:

  1. Listening: This section lasts 30 minutes and consists of four sections, each with 10 questions. Candidates listen to a range of recordings, including conversations and monologues, and answer questions related to the content.
  2. Reading: This section lasts 60 minutes and consists of three sections, with a total of 40 questions. Candidates are given a variety of texts, including articles, essays, and advertisements, and must answer questions about the content. The IELTS reading material for general training and academics is different, which candidates must be aware of.
  3. Writing: This section lasts 60 minutes and consists of two tasks. In Task 1, candidates are given a graph, chart, or diagram, and are asked to describe the information in their own words. In Task 2, candidates write an essay in response to a given topic.
  4. Speaking: This section lasts 11-14 minutes and consists of three parts. In Part 1, the examiner asks the candidate questions about themselves and their background. In Part 2, the candidate is given a topic and has one minute to prepare before speaking for up to two minutes. In Part 3, the examiner and candidate have a discussion on the topic from Part 2.

Overall, the test lasts for 2 hours and 45 minutes. The Listening, Reading, and Writing sections are taken on the same day, while the Speaking section may be taken up to 7 days before or after the other sections.

The Speaking test consists of three parts, which are designed to progressively increase in difficulty and complexity:

Part 1: The examiner asks the test-taker a series of general questions about themselves, their family, their interests, and their daily life. This part is designed to assess the test-taker’s ability to speak in a natural and spontaneous manner, and to provide basic information about themselves.
